Here we would use Gramoxone behind the planter if needed to clean up after previous burndown but have used it like your talking about as well.  I can tell you everything goes better if vegetation is good and crispy before planting.  Post planting Gramoxone and Atrazine with UAN as a carrier will smoke everything on a warm to hot day.  It's a pretty good system.
