Subject: RE: when do you intervene in bad weather

Beresford, SD
I couldn't imagine calving without a barn right now. Just got in from pulling a calf at midnight, stripped down to my t-shirt and got after it. Mom licked it off and she latched on 20 minutes after arrival. She could have done it herself, but I was being impatient and wanted my recliner.......so I broke the water and got it over with. With weather this cold I feel they need at least 24 hrs in full shelter and 48 is better. I interviene with almost every calf when it's below 32 degrees. When I say interviene I mean put them in the barn, Too much invested not too. Got 8 pair penned up tonight, tomorrow most of them will go to a small group maternity pen that has open front portable shelters for the calves.
