Ed you are right on. Most of the position error on GPS systems is due to the distortion of the satellite signal as it angles through the atmosphere. If you take readings as quickly as possible the positions of the satellites change very little so the errors are in the same direction and magnitude for each reading. Therefore if you hit the corners of a field as quickly as feasible you will get a very accurate area measurement.
