The sticking in two gears can be fixed by shims in the linkage. A mechanic with knowledge on them can fix that problem in 10 minutes (the hard part is finding the guy who knows where to shim it tight so it doesn't bind).
And yes, they are not for 'hard' work. However, my understanding is that the OP wanted a light-duty yard tractor. They are not for hard work, the rear half of the tractor is based on the old Farmall "M" with bigger bearings here and there. If you want to work, get the 706, or better yet, a 766, the later year 766 will have a WAY heavier front end.
