Ok, so how much you paying for straw per acre

Not much. I've just been baling my own. I either just buy straw, or pay someone to bale it for me on their ground. I only do straw in big squares, and I don't own a big square baler.

My mom's husband buys a lot of straw, he pays $1/bale for nice clean straw. 3 tie small squares that weigh about 75lbs each and they'll get around 100 bales to the acre.

Mostly that is just so they get it instead of someone else. It's pretty common practice here to burn straw off. Another reason I don't buy into the fertilizer amounts you often see. I know it's better to work the straw in, but I've farmed adjacent to fields that have had the straw burned off every year. Full tillage, grain potatoes rotation. It goes against everything you read, but their crops and organic matter is on par with anything in the valley.
