Practical experience is going to show it's not as much as claimed. I usually just bale what the combine windrows, not go swath it lower, so your only baling half or so anyway. I'm sure it's better if you plow it in the fall, but I usually leave it stand so the ground doesn't blow over the winter, and doubt there's much left in it by the spring anyway.
^this. Don't believe all the BS from studies, reports and NAT. Do a nutrient analysis on the straw yourself. Here's mine:
