Like others said we like to use dry fluffy deep bed straw to allow the calf to "nest". Also use jackets on them. These will help the calf use less calories to stay warm, but is not enough in our typical winters. At about 25 degrees we will start supplementing fat into the milk also. We move this supplemental rate with temperature. A 3rd feeding will also increase calories, but presents additional labor costs and an even bigger inconvenience as far as timing. Your largest threat in extended severe cold is starving your calf to death due to the minimal body fat reserves that a new born calf has not to mention that our goal is for them to grow not just maintain.
