NWIA | I think mwps has some books on housing cattle in a confinement and a cow calf book that can give you good ideas on square footage you may need and some pen layout. My dad built a 42 x 96 gable roof cattle shed that faces the south with a 4ft curtain on the back and is mostly open except for the 16 ft on the west end that has his working chutes. It has maternity pens along the back wall and a center alley to run cattle up to the head gate. It also has about 16ft that is not under roof with bunks. I like this set up and would build something like it for my cows if I had the cash. You could go narrower with the building but I would definitely have double that space that is not under roof. His building is only half cemented out but in a perfect world it would all be cemented. As far as gable or monoslope that's a personal preference. Just make sure you go tall enough. Also a lot of cattle barns put plywood on the roof to keep it from raining inside in the winter and I would definitely do that as well. I'm assuming you are doing this but put your working facilities inside this building. Share some pics if you ever build something, sorry I don't have any to share at the moment. | |
