me and my wife for 5-6 yrs have tried to buy into my father in laws dairy to no success, then all of sudden a year ago he wanted us to buy acreage, all the livestock, some equipment with no option to do anything on contract (hes not a bank he told us) and now after trying to make it work for 6 months its just not going to cows will be down the road march 1 , im gonna have to go to town get full time job, while cropping(=/-300 acres) and running a small beef herd(30). We are going to buy the acreage still, but its just frustrating with a little planning i think we could of got it work, but now nothing. Im just venting, im 32 and had basically nothing for equity(been working here for last 11 yrs) which killed us.> to the older generation i know its hard but please get plan, this isnt the 80s or 70s banks are terrified of young farmers you can make it work if you want to without having to to take less money on anything i know you guys have worked to the bone, but times are a changing.

That really sucks!
You FIL may be doing you a favor by not selling you the cows. There's not a lot of $$$ in cow dairying right now and it doesn't look good further out either!

If you're intent on dairying you might want to consider running some dairy sheep or goats instead.
If you do that and your real serious you might consider doing your own processing. That's also not an easy road but could prove to be far better for payback than running a small dairy.
Both ideas would depend upon your location and your own skills and comfort with working way outside the box!

There are options - - - - none of which are easy but if you're game and your wife pulls with you you can survive this AND WIN!!!! (Going to take time and a lot of work.)
