Years ago I installed a free standing wood stove in the house I was building for myself . I asked the building inspector if there was any way to shorten the " to combustibles" requirement . I used ceramic tile on fire resistant backer board applied to steel studs . I gained about 4 1/2" by doing that By using steel studs behind your unit , you could keep the clearances closer. Another option would be to turn the studs 1 1/2" way in the wall to gain 2" in the wall . Just my ideas . Tom
