I used copper headed (or are they brass?) L & H..? freeze branding irons. I had some home made 3/8th rod brands I used too and they results wer about equal to one another. That would make sense why our brands were poor.. Im NOW thinking the biggest issue must have been that we branded 2 + year old holstein heifers in milking lineup. We never did brand them as calves. Perahps there is an age wehn the hair pigment is more affected. All I know is sometimes you see sale barn cattle and the freeze brands are so darn nice it almost like they were painted on the hide with a narrow tiped brush(:
