Age makes a difference. As I remember, 12 to 14 months of age was prime time to brand. The older the cow, the less likely for a good brand. I may need a refresher course, but. Shave the hide. Scrub with stiff bristle brush and alchol. Plenty of alch. Wet hide just before the iron. 50 tp 60 seconds of iron time. More if animal jumps and iron gets moved. Keep irons buried in alch and ice. Add alch and let bubbling stop before using irons. Takes a certain amount of time after adding alch to be sure irons are cold.
