It's a whole lot easier to handle livestock then it used to be though. Everything in our industry works that way. We have 80 cows and it is just kind of a side line/hobby. Back in the 70s that would have been a full time occupation.
To many of us it still is a full-time occupation we're a hundred percent of our profit is generated. While some things have gotten easier they've also gotten much more expensive.
The biggest breakthrough I think for ranching in terms of real help was the invention of front assist tractors. Pickups have gotten better in terms of durability and what they can do , at least up until the early 2000s where they went the other way completely.
A twenty-year-old pick up on a cow-calf operation will make you more money than a new pick up even with the repairs. So it becomes about prestige to many, certainly isn't about profit!
