I vote for a vented gas stove/fireplace too. A propane heater in the basement can be a real hazard if you ever get a leak or the stove does not light properly. Propane is heavier than air and it will accumulate in the lower parts of your house and then any spark like a light switch will then blow up your house. I think some places have building code rules about propane fuel heaters in homes.
And your safety gas detectors need to sniff out both CO, carbon monoxide and CO2, carbon dioxide.
