It’s from years ago when 15-40 wasn’t shear stable. 30w was the only thing that would work in them. Modern oil is much better. I think there was a bulletin in the 80s that ok’d 15-40 but don’t argue with the diehard IH guys. My 1586 was bought new and never had anything but Rotella 15-40 and Baldwin filters years ago when I was a kid. It’s still never been overhauled. By some accounts it should be in the junk yard. I run a lot of 5-40 synthetic and wouldn’t worry at all no matter what brand.
