With the advancements in engine oils, is it a crazy idea to switch a dt436 or dt466b over to a 5w-40 synthetic? I have read about the cam issues and how they shear oil, but with new oils would it be a big issue? I know lots of people run 15w-40 in them with no problems, but never heard pros or cons of 5w-40 in those engines. Would probably go with Schaffer’s so I could run it in the pickup also.

I never tried synthetic, so I have no experience with that, but I ran both 15-40 and #30 in 436/ 466 combine engines up to 5 years ag when I retired. IH said it is OK to use 15-40, ONLY IF you change it at 1/2 the normal hours, 100 hours, while it is fine to use #30 up to 200 hrs. I used both for years, but oil consumption is 3X higher using 15-40 vs #30. Both oils were Mobil Delvac.
