Subject: Truck curb weights and capacity through the years

Statesville, NC
I ran across a page of specs from a 1959 Chevrolet Spartan truck, 25,000 gvw, and was really surprised at the curb weight. Depending on the wheelbase it was around 6500 pounds. This is with no bed, but still, it is less than most 3/4 tons today. Why, with all the technology we have, is a pickup this heavy? I know the old trucks had no air, gas engines, lower speeds, etc; but this is 60 years old! This 60 year old truck carried nearly three times it's curb weight. A modern pickup that weighs 7000 pounds probably has a gvwr of 10,000, so it carries 3000 pounds. This 60 year old truck of about the same curb weight, even with a 2000 pound bed, carried 16,500 pounds payload. Something just doesn't make sense about that.
