For some specific applications, for example, planting broadacre crops on hilly ground with side hill planting, when you are trying to maintain the spacing of your guess rows, passive implement steering may be suitable. When strip-tilling, on very level ground with relatively uniform soil, then you might be able to use passive implement steering if you are not too fussy about the compaction that might arise if the tractor has to make a bigger correction than the space between the rows around the tires. For those needing to keep the tractor wheels within the rows, passive implement steering may be unsuitable. When you need to control both where the tractor drives and where the implement is steered, then you will be more likely to use active implement steering. With active implement steering, both the tractor and implement are independently steered, eliminating the problems of passive implement steering. The FmX was designed to handle both of these situations. Doing both RTK solutions within the same (dual) receiver reduces or eliminates any serial data transmission delays providing the best performance possible in both situations (active or passive implement steering) compared to the situation where two separate receivers are used and are connected to the navigation computer by serial cables. There is a cost savings for users of passive implement steering because these users do not need the extra implement steering equipment, including a separate implement steering and stabilizing coulters, extra hydraulic controls, etc. I suspect if you are serious about strip-till, you are more likely to use active implement steering.
One of the nice new features of the FmX is Implement Monitoring, where an extra lightbar can be used (either an external lightbar or a software on the display) to show the displacement between the tractor and the implement. With Implement Monitoring a user can easily determine how much his implement is drifting from side to side and decide if active or passive implement steering is needed and will work for him.
