100 miles north of the NYC crapper | Last Sunday evening was like any other.
I came home about 7 drove past the barn and all seemed well. Settled in and finished dinner and we heard a fire siren not unusual. Then another and another. Wife finally glanced out the window and saw the glow......obvious barn fire.
In 40 minutes fully involved. Lost 46 head 1 escaped.
I’ve been retired from the business since I was elected local road superintendent 3 years ago.
Still very much involved emotionally.
15 fire companies did a fantastic job protecting and saving adjacent buildings. 70 some head remain.
Lots of tough decisions coming. Made even more difficult by the fact that we can trace the farm back to 1770 started by our ancestors. Its been known as millerhurst for 6 generations. Since I left brother has been downsizing and trying to concentrate on breeding quality cattle. If the fire had occurred 3-4 years ago, there would have been 110 head in there.
The outpouring of community support has been nothing short of incredible. $100 k in a go fund me and other funds.
Volunteer cleanup and the list goes on.
Just goes to show that there’s still plenty of good people out there
