I had to make a lot of (educated) assumptions in my post but my assumption of them not selling the ethanol is the big mistake, if that's how it played out.
It's interesting to see what seems like a small difference in your position (long a call instead of long futures/physical) can have on the final result. Long options rarely seem like the best strategy on day 0 but on day 100 they can be a godsend.
Be careful w/ exotic grain marketing contracts
