If we didn't spend the money to build bins we would need to have 6 trucks instead of 3 and 4 truck drivers instead of one to haul to the elevator. If we where hauling wet corn in we would also have to stop early at night because the local elevator will quit taking corn. There are costs to both systems but with the grain drying and hauling the costs the bins look like a good payback to me. It is pretty easy to just store the crop and collect the carry and wait for a better basis. We gained close to 60 cents on the basis on a few loads of beans last year. The least we gained on basis was 40 cents over fall and then you can add in the 33 to 40 cents carry. |
