California is getting into the end-game for how they've managed their forests and rangelands, as well as their real estate development practices.

The state ignored years and years of advice from people who foresaw these issues in wildland fire management - and here we are. The forests are stacked with fuel, there's huge swathes of beetle-killed trees in forests that should have been removed years and years ago

California has no say on how the forests are managed as they are owned and managed by the USDA the largest landowner within the state of CA.

The forest land was never granted to the state and was held by the federal government with the exception of the relatively small railroad grants of the 1860’s.

The USDA also has say on “real estate development” within forest lands... which has been taking back permits for summer recreational cabins and summer camps within the forest.

The Congressional representatives from forestland areas have gotten zero support from the federal government for the past 25 years as most people outside of the state only see California for LA and SF this is the whole basis of the Jefferson movement.

The real change in forest management came in 93 under the spotted owl debacle and again which really put the nail in the coffin was in 99 through an executive order that closed the forest. After 99 you could no longer graze, log, maintain forest roads and many forest roads were closed after this and let nature take over. One brave firefighter lost his life reopening a forest service that was closed in the late 90’s.
