Pistols were carried, but not so much in the fancy gunslinger rigs like the movies. I have a Luger & a .38 Super 1911 that were my Dad's & Uncle's, both have wear from being carried in a chaps pocket. This was in the 40's & 50's, not that far from the Old West "here"...
But yeah, they didn't shoot it out with any rustlers, just porcupines & other such varmints...


I’m 50 and still remember many of the old timers carrying a piece everywhere they went up into the late seventies and early eighties. S&W “lemon squeezers” must have sold big around here back in the day and “here” is a long way from the west.
I had a much older cousin who was killed in a car wreck in 1976 that always wore those low top pull on work boots. He carried .38 S&W safety hammerless in one boot and a large knife in the other. Kind of like bad,bad Leroy Brown.
