+1  Any cow or bull that even looks at me in a threatening way goes to the big mac sale.  Aggressive behavior is also contagious. One bad cow can cause the others to be flighty, etc, also.  Calves learn how to behave from watching cows.

Several comments in this thread mention accidents that occur when trying to tag a new born calf.  Another possibility in many operations is to not try to tag the calf immediately after birth. Let cow be protective and settle down, tag at first workup as discussed previously.
