I agree with the gym first to ensure that you'll stick with it and that a treadmill is what you want.
Having had and used them over the years, if you buy one, buy the best quality one you can. We had a Sears model and in about 2 years it was shot. I bought a Precor from a friend who could no longer use it and it is great but more of a commercial quality.
