we've had good luck either way, but never deeper than 2,25 inch.
we're on heavy clay, neighbor once had a custom worker put them 3-3.5 inches down and they came, but his crop yielded 30-35 bpa while everybody around us had 45-50 bpa.

in clay soil i'd really watch your depth.
but never put beans shallower than 1 inch.
