Alabama, Land of the Absurd. | You're not the only one to have a soft spot. Your post reminds me of a story written by the master storyteller, James Herriot (pen name for Dr. Alf Wight).
In his book, "All Things Wise and Wonderful", he describes Blossom, a dairy cow that is past her prime so the farmer decides to send her to slaughter.
However, the hardened old farmer retains a bit of sentiment it seems.
The chapter in the book is entitled, "Blossom Comes Home" (it is also printed as a separate book, see below).

Dr. Herriot wrote a number of books about his life as a country vet.
They were all absolutely superb.
