Subject: RE: tagging calves

NE Iowa
First digit indicates year born (8=2018, 7=2017, etc), then 2 digits indicate number of calf for the year, followed by letter indicating year born (F=2018, E=2017, etc). Also quite a bit more info, so can see all just on tag. We run a purebred/registered operation, just shy of 100 calves/year. Works well for me to not have to carry calving book to have info for prospective buyers and ourselves. Still keep all the records in computer, but good snapshot on the tags. Example tag:

422B
538C 79

2 801F 10

For this example - top number 422B = sire, upper left 538C is Dam and upper right 79 = BW. Lower corners 2, 10 = born Feb 10th - the middle bottom 801F would be the largest number to make it easiest to read, the 801F is the calf's tattoo AND tag number, and used in registration = indicating 2nd calf of 2018. (800F would be first, can go up to 899F for the year in this pattern)
