Aggieland | No it is not necessary. You're on the positive side of the fan so no risk of sucking in sewer gas. I would come out of the evaporator coil and instead of using a 90 to come down I would use a tee. Then put a 6" piece of pipe on the top side of the tee. Once a month or so when you're using the ac pour a cup of bleach in the top of the pipe. If the drain stops up you don't have to disassemble the drain to blow it clear with air or co2.
