This would be due to the lower viscosity. 5w-40 has a viscosity @ 100 C cSt ( ASTM D-445) range of 13.50-15.75 whereas the 15w-40 ranges from 14.00-1600. Viscosity is nothing more than than the measure of a fluids resistance to flow. The definition of synthetic is any lubricating fluid produced by chemically reacting materials of a specific chemical composition to produce a compound with planned and predictable properties. This is the reason synthetic lubricants perform so well under extreme cold or heat conditions as they are more stable and resist breakdown compared to conventional petroleum lubes.
