Based on my experience with 800 gearboxes I would say your head was abused severely (as in low oil, wrong oil or no oil in the gear boxes) before you got it.

Prior to replacing the gathering chain drive shafts none of the gearboxes on our head had been opened. I know of several other 800 heads still running that have never had a single gearbox problem either.

Keep the right oil in them and they are nearly indestructible.

What exactly was happening to them? Bearings out, shafts breaking, seals?
