Subject: RE: Another question for veteran milo growers...

North Central Texas
Milo is a bastard crop to the seed companies AND a bastard crop to most growers.

Several of us were talking about old dad making a consistent 4-5000 lbs back in the 70s and 80s. Then all of a sudden we hit and miss. Might get a 7 or even 9 in there but 1500 and 3 in between. Many new varieties have appeared to be a 1 or 2 hit wonder, then junk. The falling only got worse.

So what did our dads do? They farmed the crap out of it. They bedded, then knocked it down to heat the ground and planted 2-3 weeks earlier in perfect moisture. They didn't wait and plant later because corn needed to be planted first. Once it was up, they cultivated. They ran a cultivator a second time to plow in fertilizer and keep those brace roots covered. They used to have it harvested before anything, even midge, could touch it. It was a sin to bale those stalks off too.

Now it's we will plant corn till this date and switch to milo. We plant it, spray it, and wait to spray bugs. We quit farming it.
