Subject: RE: Digging Pole Barn Post Holes

The proper tool for digging these and forming the holes anyway you want size wise and depth. You use a banjo and a spoon. Dug lots of pole holes 6' deep and 16" wide to put a similar pole in. Even dug some thru severe rock infestations. Takes a little longer but very doable.

You can google banjo and spoon digging tool. Its a straight spade with a 8' handle and a similar one with a 'cup' on the end.

As you get deeper you loosen soil and force to front of the hole and drop the spoon down behind, pull the spade up and force spoon into dirt to haul out again. It is a faster process in good digging soil. Couple people digging could dig them all in a day. Best to put the pole in as fast as you get the hole dug.

And to figure out which way it should face may require a "cant" hook
