I've seen valve rotators come apart & cause that to happen, on 50 series. My theory is the 50's had a bad batch of rotators, Didn't seem to be a problem in older engines. I haven't seen it in any 55's, but could have the same rotators...
I saw a couple 3020's that had wear on the cam & lifters that caused the cam to slap the valves open hard & destroyed the caps & keepers. Weird, but it happened.
Be interesting to see what your cam & lifters look like.
But, if all the valves were hitting, it's probably the slipped gear thing...
