southern MN | That's true.
The few small dairy farms left, they do whatever works for the cows/milk, that is the paycheck. The crop ground is just to feed the cows.
As a crop farmer with a few cattle, I need to concentrate on growing good crops. I can't see messing with a good corn crop to get something else....
But then I play with my 10 acres of small grains, because really 10 acres of oats doesn't hardly pay the property taxes.... get some grain, get some straw off it, plant turnips clover and alfalfa mix with it, and I get some nice fall grazing after spreading manure on it in late summer. Then those few acres make a little more $ense for multi use, no one thing pays well but all together it keeps paying a little over and over.
