Your right, maybe the paper is better on the wix, maybe the paper is the same length but just different number of folds. The spring and the bond really has no real value either way. If you had a filter plug for some reason I think I would rather have it bypass the filter as to starving the engine. If it were the exact same then somebody would be throwing out copyright laws or something. I know there are bad filters out there and some are way over built.
It is a neat thing to see as I have always wanted to cut filters apart to compare but I really don't want to buy that many filters. Maybe the true story would be to cut apart a used filter and see how it holds up.
