Faunsdale, AL | Lot of water still being farmed here in the blackbelt even though the catfish industry has shrunk quite a bit over the last 10 years or so.
For a while we were seeing ponds being taken out, dams removed completely etc, but now that rowcrop aren't so profitable, most of them that aren't in use are just sitting empty, growing grass. There are a few being planted in duck food crops and flooded.
Most of the folks left in the business are big players. 20 years ago anyone that had some land was putting in ponds and folks were able to support a family on 80-100 acres or so. | |
