Illinois | This year I had a hybrid that had goosenecked due to the wind before pollination. Then this fall it began to cannibalise the stalk and was starting to go down. It is an older stacked hybrid (quad stack) that still needed the refuge. The refuge corn didn't have the issue so I assume it's not insect related, however I used insecticide on the refuge at planting.
I would guess this hybrid has been around for 7-8 years and I planted it because it was cheap and had always done well in the past. I paid $183 per unit for 30 bags of it and it did very well. I don't want any more of it after this year.
So do corn hybrids get played out or was this just the wrong year?
