Since you say the belts are tight, I'd suspect a bad diode in the alternator. Since an alternator is a 3-phase AC generator internally, losing one diode essentially kills one of the three phases, reducing your capacity by about 1/3. This would make perfect sense for the conditions you describe.

A bad diode can be very easily seen with an oscilloscope. Lacking that, a hand held amp clamp works well also. If, for example, the alternator is rated at 90 amps, and only puts out about 60, there's your confirmation.
