Just dropping seed on top the ground won't get much of a stand. In similar situations I have disked the grass to take some of it out and get some loose ground. Then drill 20# to the acre of alfalfa. If it is a light finishing disk hit it twice. If a big heavy disk with big blades once was enough. I never want to kill all the grass just maybe 50% of it to give the alfalfa a fighting chance. I never want a pure alfalfa stand so this has given me a nice mixed stand where I've done it.
The few times we tried something along this line, that is about the best way. Results can be mixed, more art than science to it, get lucky with a rain, etc. the grass will want to smoother the new alfalfa.
