south central WI | You could try that method if you are both in agreement of what makes an equal partnership. Have an out method to the partnership.
The other option is to charge each other for rent etc. You pay for spring pasture rent, he pays for fall, keep track of labor hours, machinery hours etc. Square up at the end of the season. He may pay a little more out to you at the end of the year, but it sounds like he would also have more hay to sell to offset that expense. Set up an expected year budget and you could see if that would work for both of you. I would expect with you supplying more machinery and land for a longer period that you would come out ahead. Even if it doesn't work that way, it may be worth some cash outlay to have good calving ground and someone to watch your cows during calving.
Either way, talk it out plenty ahead of time and make sure you both agree with requirements. | |
