"But that is a question from a guy with 440,000 miles on a 95 3/4 ton with no intentions of parking it. full floating axles will last longer, no denying that. OEM axle on this one lost the pinion support bearing and I swapped it at 435K. Unknowingly drove to Cali and back over Donner pass with the bearing out, at 21,000 lbs, found the bad bearing when I changed oil."

I agree with this sentiment. I really question how long a 1/2 ton towing what a 1 ton use to tow is going to last. Even older 1 tons are just plain built heavier. Add to that Ford's inability to build a rear end, and it's just waiting to have a break down. These new trucks have twice as much power with a smaller rear end, lighter transmission, lighter everything. Compare that to a GMC 3/4 or 1 ton that had a massive 4 speed transmission, a 10.5" full float rear end, while having only 255 HP and 330 ft lbs of torque. There was no weak link in that setup. |
