Aldi gets mentionned quite often... The Albrecht brothers started just an hour from me with a single grocery shop they inherited from their mother in 1945. In the early sixties they developed the current concept (ALDI = Albrecht Discount) and divided the business into Aldi North (Theo) and South (Karl). Both companies co-operate but are still separate. Germany keeps being divided, no longer East/West but still North/South :-) Aldi USA's mother company is "South" which currently seems to be managed better. The "North" owning family branch is in a dispute right now. |
