"Lay by" was the last pass you were able to make with a row cultivator in any crop before it got too big to go through, whether corn, soybeans, or cotton. Once we had cultivated all we were able to cultivate Dad referred to the crop as "laid by." That usually occurred sometime in July, depending on the crop and how early it was planted.
