NNW Nebraska | Sounds like what you had is a voltmeter. That tells you if fence is hot, but not much help finding the problem.
The fault finder or fence analyzer has a amp meter as well as a relative volt meter.
If you have lots of amps flowing, the short is further from fencer than where you are checking. If voltage is low, but few or no amps, look for problem closer to fencer.
Less confusing if you just ignore those stupid arrows.
I have a stayfix for years and wouldn't want to go without one.
