That is the reason that I use ninite.com for all the free software that I can. Avoids all the pitfalls of going to software download sites.

If windows 10, google up security on just using the built in windows defender. Its been "beefed up" for use in W-10. Thats all Im using now. I have malwarebytes free too to scan with if I get nervous about something.
Malwarebytes is free, but they bait you on with a trial version, and after you install do not activate the trial version. But you will still get "a nag message" about it everytime you start your browser.
