we had this happen on our 9650 when we put the 893 chopping head on it. 9760 did the same this year with the 608 c. chopping head. If you continue to run this way, you will overheat the reverser and destroy it (very expensive) what happens is the spring on your lower sheave will not hold the pressure of the chopping head. Deere will reccomend to replace the variable drive with a direct drive system, go to the heavier reverser to handle the heat of the belt, or both. Or you can buy the newer combine with the 5 speed gearbox to run your feeder house. We tried something different. First we ran the head at operating speed at 650 rpm(or whichever speed you prefer to run) and shut down the machine. then measured the gap in the upper and lower sheaves, mostly concerned about the lower. We replaced the lower sheave's spring with a collar that was the same diameter (would just slip over) the outside of the lower sheave drive(where the spring sat). This is where the measurement comes into play. Make the replacement collar lock the lower sheave in the same place the spring had the sheave gap set. The new collar will lock the sheave from moving, which stops the heat problem. On the upper sheave we put an inline valve in the line that adjusts the upper sheaves to control your feederhouse speed. with the lower sheave collar in place, we ran the machine, starting the belt completely loose, and ran it up to 650-700 rpm(allow for some drop during harvest) and locked the upper sheave in place by closing the valve we installed in the line. Then adjust the idler pulley to tension the belt properly. I kept track of the tempurature of the belt and reverser at different belt tensions using a laser temp guage, and found the proper tension on the belt this way. This system has worked very well for us, We have combined several thousand acres with this system and have not replaced a belt since.. At first we were ready to get rid of the chopper head, but this changed our mind.
