Nwmo | There are exceptions to that, non US citizen permanent residents (think green card) can own firearms and in some states can aquire cc permits.
As for the travel, there is a book that is updated every year that spells out the laws for each state. It's called the travelers guide to firearms law. States you have to watch are all Northeast states except new Hampshire maybe Maine, Illinois and of course the left coast. New Jersey routinely catches people with guns in the car and hands out pretty lengthy sentences. Governor Christy usually commutes the sentence but it's a slow process while you sit in a Jersey prison.
