From what I understand the absent class members can file for a portion of the award after it is over. They would have to go through the same steps you did to prove they are in fact members of the class, but would be able to do so if they choose.

Where it gets more tricky is you had to opt out of the class is you wanted to pursue an individual suit. The deadline for that was April 1. In an individual suit other class members can't join since it is not class action.

So in other words the lawyers will make out pretty good on it, but the farmer will have to share that half of the pie with every other farmer that qualifies in the class. If only 7000 step forward yes the payout will be high. But likely there will be many other class members to step forward.

That's just how I understand it. I could be dead wrong. But the unbiased university published info on it seems to explain it this way.
