North West IA/western AZ | Need to know where you are. Air to air heat pumps work good in warmer climates and ground source heat pumps work anywhere but cost a lot more. I had an air to air for 10 years and got along ok except when it would ice up in the winter. They have a defrost cycle to keep the coils from freezing but the melt water freezes upon dripping and builds up under the coils. Several times I had to chip ice away by hand. Those unites can also be very noisy, don't place them outside your bedroom like I did. I put in geo source and haven't had any problems since. The expensive part is burying the coolant loops. If you can do that yourself, it will save lots of money. | |
